Question:
While driving to work in Plantation I felt a tingling and numbness going down my arm.  What caused this?  I still am feeling the sensation.

Answer:
If you haven’t already gone to a physician, you need to go immediately.  There can be many different causes of numbness and tingling that can be a serious medical problem.  The serious problems include:

•    Stroke
•    Multiple sclerosis
•    Brain tumor
•    Encephalitis
•    Diabetes
•    Hypothyroidism
•    Systemic lupus eruthematosus
•    And other serious conditions.

There are other things that can cause paresthesia that are not as serious and in most cases can be relieved from an experienced Broward County chiropractor.  Many times the symptoms of numbness and the feeling of “pins and needles” can be caused by nerve compression and not be life threatening.

Nerve compression can be caused by:
•    Crossed legs
•    Anxiety attacks
•    Hyperventilation
•    A cast that is too tight
•    And other causes

You need to look back at what you were doing when the numbness and tingling sensation occurred.  It is important to tell your physician and chiropractor what you recall.  This can help the doctors with additional testing to not only determine the diagnosis, but also for the treatment that will be needed.
